FESTIVAL ROUTE DESCRIPTIONS:

Wellington Loop – Saturday 12 September 2009

15km Short Route
The 15 km loop will stay within the open farm areas north of Nelson Wine Estate and offer open, easy riding. The route remains flat and is perfect for beginners and novices.

32km Medium Route
The medium route heads out with the 55 km route but does not cross the R45 and heads in the direction of Malmesbury for an open, fast ride in flowing country side.
Perfect for intermediate riders and there is very little climbing to speak of and we expect the fastest riders to complete the loop in just over an hour.

55km Long Route
The 55 km route traces the Challenge course until we get to Groenberg where the 55 km heads back towards Nelson Wine Estate while the Challenge participants get ready for some serious climbing. A fairly flat route with few surprises - so take the time and look around at the many scenic places around the route. Among them is 'Skooltjie' the famous spot on the Berg River Canoe Marathon, where we'll be crossing the river twice during the day.
Most of the riding is on well graded farm roads and the fact that there are no major ascents mean that riders who feel that the 35 km will be too easy can safely consider this slightly longer option.

Paardeberg Loop – Sunday 13 September 2009

18km Short Route
The 18 km loop will stay in the open farm areas west of Nelson Wine Estate and offer open, easy riding. The route remains flat and is perfect for beginners and novices.
Very similar in terrain to the Saturday ride making it a great option to ride with the kids.

35km Medium Route
A fast flat start out towards the Paardeberg takes riders through rolling wheat lands and some orchards for an easy scenic ride. If you think the 18 km is too easy for you, rather ride the 35 km. Beautiful views of the Boland makes stopping for camera-moments essential!

50km Long Route
This ride offers much more climbing and even some hike-a-bike sections up the Paardeberg. You will be rewarded for your efforts by some of the most stunning views from the top of the Paardeberg Conservancy.
Apart from the nasty 10 km mountain section the route is similar to the shorter options – flat and fast. Have a look at the Challenge's -Day 3 route profile to get an idea what you are up against!
If you doubt your fitness today, rather take it easy on the 35 km option.
